The 4 Horse riders of the Recession Apocalypse

Fear, Panic, Debt and Robert Peston.

As they used to say in the war, "it's being so cheerful that keeps me going".

Thucydides

I think that 2009 was so rubbish I have been driven to delve into history. Anyway, I seem to be reading history books at the moment (Andrew Marr Making of Modern Britain, The Perfect Thing, History of the Pelopenesian War).
Thing about Thucydides is, apart from the fact that all that killing becomes strangely undifferentiated and samey after a while, is that people have not changed in two and a half thousand years. I paraphrase but one of the Athenian debates about how to treat a rebelious colony had a speaker saying "if a man does a patriotic act everyone says he only did it for his own benefit". Sounds very familiar in these times, when no politician is portrayed as anything but venal and self interested.

Plus ca change, as the French say.
